HOUSE 1: FARM HOUSE, SEBASTOPOL CA

Cheng Design’s first house is located in the apple orchards and rolling hills of Sebastopol, California, and was inspired by neighboring barns and Japanese tradition. This evocative hybrid marries simple shapes and durable materials to the sleek sophistication of hand-troweled plaster walls, polished concrete floors in ultramarine and cypress green and wood-clad structural steel poles tapered en pointe and fitted with plum-colored slippers. Four steel posts are clad in vertical grain Douglas fir and detailed with concrete “boots” to protect their delicate edges. An “erosion wall” greets visitors at the entry and has revealed figurines and objects over time, giving the home an element of surprise and a sense of whimsy—the erosion wall has become a signature element in a Fu-Tung Cheng-designed house.
